JOB DESCRIPTION – CONTROLLER
The Controller reports to the Vice President of Finance and Administration and is responsible for the management and implementation of financial functions at the National Women’s Law Center and its related organizations. The position is responsible for the supervision of three direct reports. Responsibilities include the coordination and submission of all financial reporting, including the annual financial audit; ensuring that all financial records of the organization are maintained accurately and produced on a timely basis; coordinating the month end close process; performing analyses of organizational finances; ensuring that all payments and other disbursements are made in an accurate and timely manner; and managing the financial information systems.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develops and maintains financial accounting policies and procedures that ensure strong internal controls, timeliness and compliance.
• Responsible for month-end closing process and leading the fiscal year end close out activities.
• Reviews the General Ledger to ensure that activity and balances are timely reconciled and that adjusting journal entries are prepared when necessary.
• Coordinates organizational annual audit activities.
• Provides oversight of accounts payable and receivable functions.
• Oversees bank account reconciliation.
• Oversees payroll processing and related compliance reporting
• Prepares and oversees the preparation of tax filings: 990, 1099s, federal/state lobbying reports, and state charitable registration reports.
• Prepares and monitors allocations and indirect and fringe rate calculations
• Prepares and monitors budgets for grants and/or contracts
• Ensures preparation of required financial reports for funding organizations
• Develops annual budgeting process and assists the departmental VPs with the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and address variances as appropriate.
• Develops and implements routine organizational and program-specific financial reports on projected and actual budgets;
• Provides fiscal oversight and control over the Treasury Control/Cash Receipts functions.
• Analysis and reporting on endowment spending
• Prepares cash management schedules and periodic analysis to ensure an appropriate level of cash is maintained to support daily operations that also supports the cash management in CDs and sweep accounts
• Implementation and operation of finance and accounting software packages and tools
• Responsibility for keeping abreast of regulatory changes and ensuring the organization is compliant with GAAP, tax and other regulatory filings

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required with a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
• CPA is preferred
Experience and Expertise
• Experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for complex nonprofit organizations with multiple funding sources.
• At least five years’ experience as senior finance manager, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $15 million.
• Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
• Knowledge of automated financial systems and system integration with non-financial applications. Experience with Intacct preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of GAAP including the accounting cycle, monthly and year end closing, financial reporting and analysis. Experience with chart of accounts design and job costing is a plus.
• Strong leadership skills, which are necessary to facilitate team performance in efficient and effective delivery of accounting services; ability to lead and develop a diverse group of staff, modeling exemplary professional conduct.
• Demonstrated planning, decision-making, and problem-solving capabilities; ability to work independently to prioritize work and complete projects with general direction.
• Excellent writing, editorial, and communication skills.
• Agility with standard office software tools, email, Word, Excel, and Internet tools.
• Demonstrated initiative and creativity in suggesting and researching relevant new industry best practices.
• High attention to detail.
• Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
• Experience working with accounting software and ability to anticipate infrastructure and software needs.
• Knowledge of and commitment to gender justice and advocacy.
A minimum salary of $130,000 will be provided to the successful candidate having a Bachelor’s Degree and ten years of relevant experience.
